Khalid Khreis

Painter, sculptor, print maker, art historian and curator, Khreis is one of the most trained Jordanian artists. He got his bfa at Hulwan University in Cairo, in 1978, after which he went to Barcelona and trained in painting at Escuela de Belles Artes while simultaneously training in sculpture at Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artisticos. Between 1979 and 1981, he followed courses in mural painting at Escuela Internacional Pintura Mural, San Cugat, graphic art and sculpture at Pietro Vannucci in Perugia, Italy; and screen printing at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. In 1989, he went back to Barcelona to train in lithography at Escuela de Artes del Libro and get a PhD in History of Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts, at the University of Barcelona in 1993. Khreis has held seventeen solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Jordan and across the Arab world, Europe, Canada and the Far East. Among his honours and awards are: Commander of the Order of Civil Merit, awarded by King Juan Carlos of Spain in 2004; the National Award for Excellence in the Arts, Amman in 1995; First Prize, “Joan Miró” International Contest, Spanish Arab Institute, Madrid in 1985; and First Prize “Homage of Miró and Picasso Contest,” Spanish Cultural Centre, Amman in 1984. Khreis lives and works in Amman and has been Director General of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts since 2002
