Samer Hatam obtained a Diploma in Graphic Art from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1985; Fine Arts in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1989 and graduated with an MA degree in Fine Arts from Elam, the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 2008.
Since 2004, he has been residing in New Zealand, where he has been pursuing his artistic career and has held three solo shows. He has also participated in a significant number of group shows both in Auckland and Dubai. Samer Hatam creates both sculptures and paintings, which demonstrate dark, complex textures and a homage to ancient Mesopotamian forms. In his recent work, he utilizes new materials that characterize a fusion of both the Iraqi culture and that of his adopted home.
